Üsküdar:
Here in Üsküdar, buildings, churches, mosques, cafes, and restaurants all come together, embracing history. The famous Maiden’s Tower (Kız Kulesi) in Istanbul with its many intriguing stories stands proudly in Üsküdar. Additionally, the Beylerbeyi Palace is an impressive historical landmark, narrating tales of ancient history and showcasing unmatched architectural beauty.
One of the significant attractions in Üsküdar is the Sultanah Mosque (Mihrimah Sultan Mosque), located on the Asian side of Istanbul. It is one of the most prominent landmarks worth visiting. The name “Mihrimah” is of Persian origin, where “Mihr” means the sun, and “mah” means the moon in the Persian language. Also known as “Camii-i Kebir” (The Great Mosque), it was built in the 16th century by the renowned architect Sinan. Legend has it that Mihrimah Sultan was in love with Ahmed Pasha, the governor of Diyarbakir, and also with the architect Sinan Pasha. In the end, she married Ahmed Pasha and requested Sinan Pasha to build a mosque for her. Thus, he constructed the beautiful and splendid Mihrimah Sultan Mosque in Üsküdar in 1548. He also built another mosque named after her in the European part of Istanbul, in the area of Adenekapı, between 1562 and 1565. Both mosques share the same name, and the secret behind these two mosques is that every year on the 21st of March, the day of her birth, as the sun sets behind the minaret of the Mihrimah Mosque in the European part, the moon rises above the minaret of the Mihrimah Mosque on the Asian side. Just like the sun and moon never meet, Sinan Pasha and his beloved never united, so he built each mosque in a different part, one in Europe and the other in Asia.
